    About the "Emerging Trends in Global Health" course

    The 2008 course has been organized to run over 15 Sessions between January and May. It will be accessible by video to anyone who is interested (check out the website at www.globalhealthtrends.org for more information and details).

    The Sessions are organized along the following lines:

    Part A. Understanding Changing Global Health Priorities and Needs (Session 1 - Session 7)

    During the first half of the course, we will explore contemporary issues, problems and controversies in global health and development. This will be done through a discussion of real-world and present-day global health challenges and opportunities created by inequities in health care and health status around the globe, changing demographic patterns of disease and epidemiological transitions, increasing globalization and 21st century threats. Social, economic, political and environmental factors that affect global health will also be addressed.

    Session 2 - Globalization, Development and Health

    Session 3 - Changing Trends in Communicable Diseases: Implications for Global Health

    Session 4 -
    Changing Trends in Non-Communicable Diseases: Implications for Global Health

    Session 5 -
    Nutrition, Food Security and Global Health

    Session 6 -
    Mind, Behavior and Global Health

    Session 7 -
    Environment, Sustainability and Global Health

    Part B. Making Things Happen in International Health (Session 8 - Session 15)

    The second half of the course will focus on addressing the growing range of tools, technologies, implementation and financing strategies, and approaches to responding to public health priorities and needs, and how they can be applied in the context of “doing things right while doing the right things”.

    Session 8 - Technology Innovation and Global Health 1: Biomedical Sciences

    Session 9 - Technology Innovation and Global Health 2 – InfoComm and Medical Devices

    Session 10 -
    Monitoring, Surveillance and Rapid Response Capabilities

    Session 11 -
    Health Financing and Health Outcomes in the Global Health Context

    Session 12 -
    The Changing Role of the Private Sector in the Global Health Arena

    Session 13 -
    Ethics and Global Health

    Session 14 -
    Organizing and Mobilizing for Global Health

    Session 15 -
    Future Directions in Global Health

    Beyond the first session - which will focus on providing the framework for the course and laying out objectives, goals and expectations - each subsequent session between Session 2 and Session 15 will be organized according to the following format:

    • Opening Lecture (Strategic Overview)
    • Individual Oral Presentations (up to 2 per session)
    • Break
    • Case Study: Setting the Stage
    • Discussant/Facilitator-led Case Study Discussion
    • Open Discussion, Session Synthesis and Conclusions
